Non-Destructive Testing

The non-destructive testing (NDT) are the complex of tests, examinations and surveys carried out using methods that do not alter the material and do not require the destruction or removal of samples of the structure in question aimed at finding and identifying defects of the structure itself.
The first differentiation is between volumetric and superficial methods. The first ones show indications (defects) present in the whole volume of the object (RT, UT) while the others show only the defects outcropping on the surface (PT, VT) or very close to the surface on which the control is being carried out (MT).
The VT exam is very important because it is the only one that verifies the welding cord geometry foreseen by the designer, while all the others check its quality; precisely for this reason the rules provide for a visual check on all the structural metal constructions.
The volumetric methodologies allow to inspect the whole volume of the piece and are often used in combination with a surface method.

Heat treatments

Heat treatment is the heating cycle carried out in predetermined conditions and temperatures which must be followed by cooling, more or less slow, in order to make a metal or a metal alloy take on those crystalline structures that give it certain mechanical and/ or technological characteristics.

Metallography consists in studying the physical structure of metals and metal alloys using a microscope. In this way it is possible to determine, depending on the case, the following characteristics: the dimensions and the shape of the crystals; the distribution of the phases; the direction of the slip lines; the level of purity and the possible presence of contamination of the material.
